Jim retired from L-3 in 2012 as Corporate Senior Vice President and President and COO of L-3 Communications, Electronic Systems Group (ESG). L-3 ESG was organized into four strategic business sectors - EO/IR, Precision Engagement, Undersea Warfare and Simulation and Training. The EO/IR group develops fully integrated imaging and sensor solutions for air, land and sea platforms. Precision Engagement provides weapons, components and precision location technology used in a wide variety of weapons systems. Undersea Warfare supplies sonars and counter-mine warfare systems supporting submarine, surface combatant and aviation platforms. Simulation & Training divisions deliver individual and networked training systems and associated services and are world leaders in simulation-based training for military aviation.
With over 35 years of management and engineering experience in electronics systems and avionics, Mr. Dunn joined L-3 Communications in June, 2000 as president of L-3’s Link Simulation & Training division. In this role, he was responsible for managing and growing Link’s worldwide operations, with a focus on the development and delivery of military training systems and services.
Prior to joining L-3, Mr. Dunn served as president of Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems. Preceding his appointment as president of LMTDS, Mr. Dunn served as president of Lockheed Martin Defense Systems Group and Lockheed Martin Fairchild Systems.
He began his career in 1966 at the Singer Company, Kearfott Division, where he held various systems engineering positions leading to management positions. Mr. Dunn later joined Loral in 1978 as engineering director for the ALR56C Radar Warning Receiver program. While at Loral, he was named senior vice president of Engineering and senior vice president of Program Management. In 1990, he became president of Loral Fairchild Systems and continued as president of Lockheed Martin Fairchild Systems when Loral Corporation merged with Lockheed Martin. He then joined Lockheed Martin’s NESS group where he served as president of NESS Eagan, Akron and Archibald divisions.
Mr. Dunn received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in business administration from New York University
Larry Harrell spent 26 years working for Northrop Grumman. He retired as a Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems Vice President assigned to support the acquisition of Scaled Composites. Prior to this role, he was the Managing Director and CEO of AGS Industries GmbH, a joint venture that represented the interest of six shareholder companies and the Industrial Participation interests of NATO countries. He was responsible for managing the prime contract for the NATO AGS Program, leading the JV in preparing the AGS-I proposal, negotiations, and issuing contracts to the six core industries and the main sensor provider (Transatlantic Cooperative Advanced Radar).
Prior to this assignment, Larry was Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Technology in charge of Integrated Systems and Platforms and was responsible for coordination among Northrop Grumman’s Newport News, Ship Systems, and Integrated Systems sectors. His responsibilities included Sector business strategy, front-end merger, acquisition and divestiture, and optimizing technology investments in connection with developing the company’s strategic framework.
With 34 years of professional experience in the defense industry, Larry has expertise in test and evaluation, research and development, project management, manufacturing operations, program management, business management, and business development. He worked as an engineering manager on the B-2 Program, and was the air vehicle manager on the first aircraft delivered to the U.S. Air Force. He was also the manager on the first B-2 upgrade program as part of the spiral development program.
Larry holds a bachelor degree in aeronautical engineering from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and a master’s degree in technology management from Pepperdine University. He has also earned a certificate in toxic and hazardous materials management from the University of California at Los Angeles, and completed executive management and marketing programs from the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, MIT, and the Cranfield University School of Management in London. Larry has also served on the Board of Directors for Scaled Composites, Aurora Flight Sciences, and Hiller Aviation Institute. In 2000 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors for TRW Automotive.
